Our time in Cornwall is winding down and today (Monday) we are heading for the west Devon coast.
Before leaving Penzance, I had the opportunity to take a few photos of one of the "roads" we drove up to get to the town centre. I actually wasn't convinced it was a road when I started driving up it but, indeed it is!
While the weather has been a bit better than forecast, at times the fog has prevented us from seeing some of this county's beautiful scenery. I already wrote about the fog on the Lizard Peninsula and yesterday the morning started out similarly as we drove from St. Just (the pretty village in the midst of the majority of the tin mines) to St. Ives. The road (the main artery between these two places) was at times a single track (as they say here) and we were following a tour bus and being followed by another one. At times it made for a very uncomfortable "sandwich", particularly when we all had to back up or otherwise maneuver to let oncoming vehicles get by. Believe me, this is not for the faint of heart!
Luckily, by the time we reached our first destination, St. Agnes to visit friends, the sky had cleared. Adrienne and her husband took us to St, Agnes Head as well as their "local" beach called Trevaunance Cove. At least in both these places, we got to see some of the spectacular coastline here. It was just a shame that earlier in the day we could see nothing!
We returned to their home where we were treated to a Cornish cream tea. Now, Devon is also famous for its cream teas and I was curious about the difference. Well, apparently it is all about whether you put the jam or the clotted cream onto the scone first. In Devon, it is the cream and, in Cornwall, it is the jam. Regardless, as someone said, it all ends up in the same place at the same time! Either way, it is yummy and I confess I prefer the Devon way!
We have been trying to keep track of the funny expressions or names that we have seen along the way. Road warnings such as "CAUTION! ONCOMING VEHICLES IN MIDDLE OF ROAD" can be a bit scary but they are generally manageable. Another one that struck us as quirky was "CAUTION: CAT'S EYES REMOVED". While this conjured up the image of a bunch of blind felines running all over the road, it was only that the centre line reflectors were no longer there.
Finally, as we went through St. Agnes, Adrienne pointed out one of the quirkier lane names in their village. We managed to get a photo of it as we drove out of the village.
